However, there are also some foods that should be avoided or eaten only in moderation. These are

  • Red meat that is pork, mutton, or beef in all its forms.
  • Buttermilk because of its high sodium content should also be avoided.
  • Cheese and cheese spreads can prove to be harmful for a person with high blood pressure.
  • All forms of salted snacks such as chips and processed nuts.
  • Ready-to-eat microwave dishes such as instant meals, pot pies, burgers, and pizzas are to be taken off the menu. These can be consumed once in a while but their sodium and salt content should be checked.
  • Canned vegetables should be avoided as these usually contain additives that can add to the risk of high blood pressure. If there is no other choice than having canned vegetables then it is advisable to rinse the vegetables thoroughly before eating.
  • Pickled foods.
  • Regular canned soups and instant soups.
  • Sauces or condiments used for food flavoring should also be avoided.

These lists of food items that can both reduce and instigate high blood pressure are not complete but can give you a general idea of what you should avoid and what you should eat. Of course when deciding on a diet plan, your doctor or nutritionist should be consulted to ensure that you eat what your body needs.

Other than food, a suitable exercise plan can also work wonders in reducing and maintaining stable pulse readings. Many people feel that those suffering from hypertension should not engage in exercise or any strenuous work. However, doctors tend to recommend specific exercises that should be done on a regular basis by people with hypertension.

High blood pressure is the result of your heart being under constant strain and requiring great effort to pump blood throughout your body. Like any machine, it can break down if overworked. Consult with your doctor to see which kinds of exercises you can perform.

Monitoring Your Pulse Rate

Blood pressure is the force on the walls of arteries due to the beating of your heart. This pressure is measured by the comparison of two measures, the systolic pressure (maximum) and the diastolic pressure (minimum). The systolic pressure is the pressure exerted when the heart is beating or pumping blood. The diastolic pressure is the one recorded between the heartbeats when the heart relaxes. Based on the recording of these two pressures, someone can decide whether you have high, low, or normal blood pressure.

Blood pressure charts serve as an efficient tool to identify and monitor these blood flow levels. Normal bp should be around 120 over 80. If one day you go for your routine checkup and find that your pulse is 140 over 90, then you may have hypertension. Conversely, if your pulse drops down to 90 over 60, then you likely have hypotension. In both cases, your doctor will suggest certain medications to bring your blood pressure to a more stable reading. Regular visits to the doctor is strongly advised at this point.

Do note that “normal” blood pressure will vary from person to person. Differing factors such as age, gender, physical activity, drugs taken, etc, can all impact a person’s heart rate, giving each individual a normal range that could be somewhat different from the standard 120/90.

While you can buy machines that will monitor your blood circulation rate, frequent visits to your doctor can also count towards checking up on your vitals. This should be done if you have been diagnosed with hypotension or any form of hypertension. Once you take the appropriate dietary, medicative, and physical adjustments necessary to normalize your blood pressure, you can resort back to leading a normal life.
